Engine Oil Specifications

Engine Oil Specifications

I did my research! I need 5W-30 engine oil, can I just buy any engine oil that is 5W-30?

No, no and definitely no!           Wrong Engine Oil

Not all engines are the same, so it shouldn't be a surprise that oils aren't the same either. Always follow vehicle manufacturer guidelines since oil specifications differ from vehicle make to make. The specification is another way that engine oils differ even if they are the same viscosity.

Car manufacturers and oil companies work together to agree performance specifications for engine oils. There are several different sets of standards around the world:

- The American Petroleum Institute (API)
- The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA)
- The International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC)

So rule of thumb: Always follow vehicle manufacturer guidelines as oil specifications differ from vehicle make to make. You can check the vehicles owners’ manual for the correct SAE viscosity for your car engine. Most manufacturers also put the engine oil rating on the oil cap on the engine itself.
